Nitrous Oxide & Sedation Dentistry

Nitrous Oxide & Sedation Dentistry

Helping children feel comfortable is an important part of our general dental practice. Dr. Sadek discusses available comfort options with parents based on the child’s health history, dental needs, and planned treatment.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen is inhaled through a small mask and can help a child relax. It is different from local anesthesia, which numbs a treatment area. A child may need local anesthesia even when nitrous oxide is used.

Other sedation options

When appropriate, IV sedation may be arranged with an anesthesiologist. The care team explains the proposed level of sedation, who will administer and monitor it, preparation instructions, risks, alternatives, and recovery needs.

No single comfort approach is right for every child. Please discuss your child’s medical history and any questions with the office before treatment.
